History of our school
Ardkeeran NS is situated in the village of Riverstown in the south of County Sligo. As Gaeilge, Rivertown is called Baile Idir Dhá Abhainn or the town between two rivers; the Arrow and the Douglas. It is situated off the old N4, about 3 km from Drumfin.
Ardkeeran National School was built in 1903. It was dedicated to Saint Mathona, a holy woman chosen by St Patrick to take charge of a local church.
Originally, it was set up as a two-teacher school.
In 1957, it was reconstructed and one classroom was subdivided to accommodate an extra teacher.
Population growth in recent years led to the construction of additional classrooms.
In 2000, it became a four-teacher school, and two new prefabricated classrooms were placed at the back of the school. In 2016, these were replaced by a new extension at the rear of the school. This included two new classrooms, a new learning support room, an office, and storage space.
Further expansion followed in 2020, when a fifth classroom and another learning support room were constructed.
The school has also developed outside with playground equipment, games, and an outdoor classroom on the front yard.
The back yard has been extended to include an area for football, a basketball area, playground markings, and a grass pitch at the rear.
The school garden is also located on the grass pitch.
Currently, the school employs 8 full-time teachers and 1 part-time teacher. We have 3 special needs assistants, a secretary, and a caretaker.
